Friends of Hue Foundation would like to welcome everyone a wonderful Lunar New Year!
The “Year of the Monkey” officially begins February 8, but preparations began days ahead. Tradition calls for the cleaning of homes, sweeping away of all the previous year’s bad luck, and offering meals to our ancestors at the altar. One of the most beloved traditions at the FHF Children Shelter is making bánh chưng, a rice cake stuffed with pork and mung bean that takes about 12 hours to prep and cook. Usually, the day before, the kids would stay up all night to cook the cakes with the staff, creating memorable moments for the new year.
Another beloved tradition is the gifting of “lì xì,” or red envelopes. Kids are offered these lucky envelopes to help ensure a prosperous year ahead. Here, our children proudly display their lì xì right before their final meal together, marking the end of the Lunar New Year.
